A&S 238 Gender and Popular Culture

This course examines the intersection of gender and popular culture from an anthropoligical point of view. We consider how popular culture-comics, films, TV programs, performances, etc.-challenge or substantiate gendered norms in various cultural contexts. Given that daily lives in any culture are awash in popular culture, we focus on pop culture to ask how difference and power are socially constructed, and what effect these constructions have on gendered identities.
