FYS 130 Being Nonhuman

What does it mean to be human in the contemporary world? Is there a common humanity? If so, what do humans share with each other that other living beings do not have? In this course we will explore how the definition of humanity has historically rested on assumptions about nonhuman life, and we will consider how various scholars and artists have approached the nonhuman—from bacteria to animals to cyborgs—in their work.
