HIST 122 European Race-Making from Columbus to Abolition

This course explores the development of race and racism in Europe, 1492-1807, by following things as they moved around the world. In this period of increased global contact, explorers, missionaries, consumers, laborers, and enslaved people used material objects to create or challenge racial hierarchies. Students will conduct their own research on the relationship between race and two early modern objects or images and will contribute their findings to an online exhibit.
