ENG 383 History of the Novel

This course explores the history of the most familiar and “natural-seeming” of literary genres, asking what specific conditions made its rise possible. In our survey of the genre, we’ll be interested in books that really are “novel”--that do something new. Along the way, we’ll grapple with a number of theories of the novel–what it is and where it comes from–and explore both historical and current debates about what novels should look like.
