FYS 099 The Way of Eating: Food in World Cultures

Why do we fast, feast, kill animals, feed spirits, and throw potluck suppers? What various culinary traditions teach us about social diversity, cultural pluralism, gender (in)equality, and interfaith connection? This course explores how eating and cooking reflect ethics, identity, health, modernity, globalization, and more through readings, films, and field trips. No forks nor cooking skills required—just intellectual appetites! Together we explore how we use food to define ourselves and make sense of the world.
