MATH 141 Elements of Differential Calculus
An introduction to differential calculus in one and several variables, emphasizing applications to economics and the sciences. Topic include: review of exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric functions; contours for functions of two variables; notion of limit and instantaneous rate of change; ordinary and partial derivatives; techniques of differentiation; linear approximation and slopes of contours; optimization in one and two variables, including constrained optimization via Lagrange multipliers. Not open to students enrolled in, or who have credit for, MATH 161 or MATH 165.
Prerequisite
High school precalculus. Precalculus readiness is in part assess through departmental placement advising.
