English, A.B. Major, Writing Concentration (Class of 2026)

Requirements

The writing concentration within the English major allows students to concentrate on a variety of styles and forms, including creative writing, nonfiction, journalism, media, and rhetoric.

The major consists of a minimum of 10 courses:

ENG 205	Introduction to English Studies I	1
ENG 206	Literary History	1
ENG	Three ENG electives

Three English electives: Numbered 300 or above. One of the electives must be a course in literature prior to 1700, one must be a course in literature focused in the years 1700-1900 and one must be a course in literature focused in the years 1900 and above.

ENG 150	Introduction to the Digital Humanities	1
ENG 151	Introduction to Creative Writing	1
ENG 231	Journalistic Writing	1
ENG 250	Writing Genres	1
ENG 251/FAMS 251	Screenwriting	1
ENG 252/FAMS 252	Writing for Television	1
ENG 254	Humor Writing	1
ENG 256	Fiction Writing Workshop	1
ENG 257	Poetry Writing Workshop	1

ENG 250: May be repeated for credit when they address different topics. The adviser will authorize counting special topics courses toward the concentration when they are offered with a writing focus.

ENG 350	Studies in Writing and Rhetoric	1
ENG 351	Environmental Writing	1
ENG 353	Advanced Journalistic Writing	1
ENG 361	Advanced Creative Writing: Poetry	1
ENG 362	Advanced Creative Writing: Short Fiction	1

ENG 350: May be repeated for credit when they address different topics. The adviser will authorize counting special topics courses toward the concentration when they are offered with a writing focus.

No more than one semester of independent study or thesis may be included. ENG 100 (Intro to Academic Writing), ENG 202 (Writing Seminar), and ENG 272 (Internship) do not count toward the writing concentration.
