CLSS 210 Gender and Sexuality in Ancient Greece and Rome
This course critically examines ancient Greek and Roman constructions of gender and sexuality through the literary tradition of elegiac love poetry and related genres. Students will read foundational authors such as Sappho, Catullus, Propertius, Tibullus, and Sulpicia. Topics include same-sex desire, transformations of the body, masculinity, femininity, and poetic fashioning. Special attention will be paid to how race, religion, and class shape literary and historical discourses of desire, power, and identity.
