HIST 105 Histories of the Modern World

This course surveys the history of world events in recent centuries, analyzing the question of what is “modern” and discussing ways in which the concept of modernity is contested and problematic. It foregrounds historical thinking while studying multiple world areas in depth and considering transnational, transregional and other border-crossing processes. Themes covered include, but are not limited to: race as a historical process, slavery, colonialism, shifting political sovereignties, and transformations in the global economy.
