HIST 276 Conquest: A History

This course will examine the global history of conquest from ancient times to the present. We will study conquests by Assyrians, Persians, Greeks, Mauryans, Chinese, Romans, Mongols, Malinke, Aztecs, Incas, Songhai, Ottomans, Mughals, Spanish, British, Manchus, Asante, Russians, Americans, Japanese, and others throughout history. We will consider why they conquered, what their ideologies and justifications were, how they achieved and maintained their conquests, how the conquests fit with contemporary legal standards, and what the impacts of the conquests were.
