Withdrawal from Courses

During the first two weeks of the fall or spring semester, or equivalent in winter-interim and summer sessions, a student is permitted to drop a course without a transcript notation and replace it with another course, if needed. From the end of the two-week period until the end of the eleventh week of the semester, or equivalent in winter-interim and summer sessions, a student may withdraw from a course with no effect on either semester or cumulative Grade Point Average, and with a "withdrawal" recorded on the transcript. Ordinarily, approval will be granted, provided that after the course withdrawal the student's schedule does not fall below three courses in any fall or spring semester.

If a petition to withdraw results in a student’s enrollment falling below three course credits in any fall or spring semester, the student must provide the Student Affairs Committee with a compelling educational rationale to justify the waiver of standard policy. A student must continue to attend all classes until the petition has been reviewed by the Committee.

In all cases, petitions to withdraw should include an indication of the means by which any deficiency incurred will be made up. A student who does not withdraw by the published deadline may fail the course.

A student who experiences a documented, non-academic emergency/extenuating circumstance causing them to miss the published withdrawal deadline may petition to the Student Affairs Committee for a late withdrawal.  Petitions, complete with supporting documentation, will be accepted for up to three months after the published the grade due date for the semester. Submission of the petition does not guarantee approval.

Students are not permitted to withdraw from courses taken as part of winter-interim or summer domestic or international off-campus studies programs. Please refer to program-specific dates/deadlines/policies provided by the Office of International and Off-Campus Education.
