REL 330 The Cult Controversy in the United States
An exploration of religious movements in the US often popularly known as “cults” such as the Peace Mission, the Nation of Islam, the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, the Unification Church, the People’s Temple, the Branch Davidians, Scientology, and Nxivm, and how these groups challenge conventional views regarding race, gender, sexuality and the family. Analysis of the anti-cult movement and controversies surrounding brainwashing, mind control, and deprogramming, as well as popular media portrayals of cults.
