HIST 377 Lafayette in Persia: Archives, Missionary Lives and the Craft of History
More than one hundred years ago, a Lafayette alum helped found a school in Tehran, Iran. Another alum, Walter Groves, later taught there, and together with his wife Estelle, wrote hundreds of vivid letters about life, learning and missionary work in 1920s Iran. These letters are now held in Skillman Library’s Special Collections. In this archive-centered seminar, students will examine gender, empire and education, and write original research papers that turn private correspondence into historical craft.
