ASIA 270 Introduction to Contemporary Chinese Cinema

Ever since film was introduced in China at the end of the nineteenth century, it has played a crucial role in China's quest for modernity, while also serving as a major form of mass communication. Despite facing warfare, censorship, competition from Hollywood, and other obstacles over the last century, today the Chinese film industry is on of the most vibrant in the world. This course introduces students to the history, genres, and transnational reach of Chinese cinema since 1980, through analyzing representative films from mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Chinese cinema will be examined not only through artistic lenses, but also those of commerce and industry. All films have English subtitles. No knowledge of Chinese language will be necessary.
