A&S 310 Latin American and Caribbean Decolonial Theories and Practices
In this course we will engage with a wide range of decolonial theories and practices from the Americas. Grounded in the theorization of 20th century revolts by Caribbean thinkers like Aimé Césaire and Frantz Fanon, we’ll look towards contemporary Latin American decolonial theorists and engage with concrete proposals for building decolonial practices. Central to the class are these fundamental questions: why does coloniality persist even in the absence of formal colonial rule? How is coloniality experienced by the colonized but also by the racialized and gendered peoples in the so-called Global North? Is there something to recover from a pre-colonial past and what might a decolonial future look like?
