INDS 126 Italy from the margins

This course offers students critical understanding of Italy as a cultural, economic and political center across the ages, with a focus on the contributions and lives of its marginalized peoples. We will spend time in some of Italy’s most iconic cities - Rome, Florence, Bologna and Venice - however, our examination of these places will center on the experiences of those marginalized by their social, political, economic, and religious identities. Specifically, we will examine the everyday lives of women, immigrants, religious and sexual minorities, people who were enslaved, and people with disabilities throughout Italy’s history, from the Renaissance to contemporary times. By starting from the experiences of those who are most marginalized, this course offers a different telling of who and what has shaped Italy’s architecture, food, art, politics, cultural institutions, and economy.
