Soccer has excited audiences for centuries. While the game’s cathartic and entertainment value are indisputable, the field of play has been the site of contested understandings of order and what’s permissible. From moral panics about the propriety of women’s participation to disputes over Catalan nationalism, the game has been at the center of numerous socio-political struggles. The course foregrounds historical methods to examine the impact of soccer on the pitch and beyond across varying contexts.
