HIST 219 Slavery in the Ancient Greek and Roman Worlds

An investigation of slavery in the Greek and Roman worlds with an emphasis on its connections to other major social and cultural developments such as literature, politics, and religion. Students will analyze literary, artistic, legal, and archaeological evidence to examine the institution of slavery, to explore experiences of enslaved and manumitted people, and to interpret representations of slavery in Greco-Roman culture. Special attention will be paid to how gender, sexuality, race, and ethnicity inform slavery. (Formerly CLSS 325)
