FYS 197 Deconstructing "Africa"

The African continent has been subject to a wide range of perspectives from the Greco-Roman period to the present, many of which have misrepresented the diversity, sophistication, and contributions of African people and communities to world history. This seminar introduces students to African life in the past and present beyond existing stereotypes. Taking an Afro-centric view, it examines African agency through history, philosophy, fiction, art, and film to explain why the 21st century will ultimately be known as the African Century.
