FYS 195 Russia Today

"A riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma," is how Winston Churchill famously described Russia. Decades later, after the Cold War and amidst the resurgence of Russia's influence on the world stage, this seminar asks the question: What is Russia today? Taking into account conservative and liberal movements, we will study mass media, contemporary literature and cinema, and activism under Putin with an eye to challenging our assumptions about Russia culture, politics, and history.
