GOVT 420 Topics in Latin American Politics

This course is an advanced seminar covering Latin American politics from the 1930s to the present, with a focus on Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Peru, and Venezuela. The course is organized thematically, exploring topics such as the perils of presidentialism; the roots of party system stability; the recent resurgence of populism; the decline of corporatism; the rise of new social movements; the Catholic Church; state weakness; and the left turn.
