GOVT 221 South Asian Politics
This course introduces the politics of South Asia, a region home to one-fourth of the world’s population. Using a comparative lens, students will examine democratization, nationalism, caste and class politics, ethnic and religious conflict, and debates over development and state capacity. The course emphasizes how colonialism and anti-colonial movements shaped contemporary institutions and political contestation in the region, and it considers regional relations and South Asia’s place in global politics.
