GOVT 228 Democratization and Democratic Breakdown
This course examines democratization and democratic breakdown from the First Wave of Democratization (1828-1922) through the Third Wave (1975-95). We ask why stable democracies first emerged in Europe; why stable democracies broke down in interwar Europe and Cold-War-era Latin America; and what caused the Third Wave of Democratization. In closing, we discuss the democratic exuberance of the immediate post-Cold-War-period.
