GOVT 223 Politics of Africa

This course provides an introductory survey of contemporary politics in Africa, examining forces that shape fundamental outcomes of politics: economic prosperity and human development, political order and conflict, and democracy and effective governance. Applying a variety of methodologies, we explore questions such as: why did authoritarianism emerge in some African countries but not others after independence? What are the causes of civil wars and economic development? What actions might contribute to peace, prosperity, and democracy?
